Our services
Midwifery Care
A midwife is a trained professional who provides wellness care for a woman and her newborn throughout the childbearing cycle. We provide prenatal care, labor and delivery care and postpartum care with an emphasis on informing and educating you, and supporting you in making the decisions that are right for you as an individual and a family. Midwives feel that pregnancy and birth are normal healthy events in the female life cycle. The basic responsibility of the midwife is to facilitate the healthy progression through pregnancy, birth, postpartum and early parenting, while guarding against complications.
Traditionally, midwives are known for their comforting, gentle support of the birthing mother. Today we strive to combine these caring attitudes with the technical information currently available in order to provide an alternative that is safe, respectful, and satisfying. Midwives provide evidence based care while honoring our clients’ values and preferences to provide for shared decision making in the birthing process.
At The Midwives’ Place, we also view birth as a scared rite of passage. We understand that the sacred aspect of birth is different for each individual. We are honored to assist you in kindling that element of your birth.
In Arizona, a Licensed Midwife must meet current state requirements, including:
Completion of a state recognized course of training
Successful completion of state licensing exams, including written, oral and clinical
Maintaining continuing education credits
Certification in neonatal and adult CPR
Adherence to guidelines of Arizona Department of Health Services
Birthing or laboring in Water
Water birth is a very popular option with the families we serve. There are many reasons water birth can be desirable. Even if you choose to give birth out of water, there are benefits to laboring in water. Many women prefer water birth because:
Water birth can decrease the pain that is often associated with labor.
Birthing in water increases relaxation.
There is decreased need for analgesia and anesthesia with immersion in water during labor.
There is lower incidence of perineal trauma.
Many experts feel that it’s less stressful for the baby.
Being in the birthing pool provides a space that protects from unnecessary intervention.
Water labors tend to be shorter.
The pool creates a protected “sacred space” for bonding in the moments following the birth of your baby.
There are also reasons why midwives might appreciate water birth.
Water birth can decrease a mother’s blood pressure
Being in water allows for better positioning of the baby
The water creates a cushioning effect and so decreased fetal heart rate (fetal distress) is less common.
The incidence of cesarean birth is decreased when a woman labors in water.
Cleanup is easier.
Due to the typically easier labor, water birth is physically easier on the midwife.
Transfer of care for prolonged labor is less likely when a woman chooses water birth.
The decreased need for perineal repair makes the midwife’s job easier.
What’s it like to labor in water? Once you are in the pool, you are in your own undisturbed world. You may feel lighter and you will be able to move more easily. This helps you to find the most comfortable position for relaxation. The water will be kept at a comfortable temperature for you throughout your labor, although we may warm it up slightly just before the baby is born. Some mothers become so much more comfortable when they get into the water that they think labor has stopped or slowed down, when in reality the contractions are actually more efficient even though they’re more comfortable.
If desired, the father or birth partner can also be in the pool. Many fathers appreciate the comforting effect the water has on the laboring Mom. Many also find that the experience of water birth feels more intimate. Some fathers choose to receive their baby into their own hands or sometimes the parents choose to receive the baby together.
When considering your options in childbirth, and especially when your are considering water birth, it’s always important to keep an open mind. Many women are so drawn to water birth that it becomes their ideal. On some occasions we find that a laboring woman simply prefers to be out of water when the baby comes. On rare occasion it might be deemed in the best interest of either baby or mother to move out of water for the birth. You can’t always predict what you will really want in labor. So it’s important to maintain flexible attitude, and to be open to whatever your body leads you to do when you are in labor.
Water birth is an option that is not available in any hospitals in Norther Arizona.
Waterbirth is safe when attended by expert professionals, and when a few basic rules are applied. See https://evidencebasedbirth.com/waterbirth/ for information on water birth safety. We have 20 years of experience with water birth. We will guide you to sources for supplies and nice, inexpensive pools. Setting up the pool is easy and we are here to advise you.We will drain and deflate the pool and clean up the room before leaving.
Whether you choose to birth in the water or out, we are here to guide and assist you in having an empowering and enjoyable birthing experience.
Prenatal Care
At your wellness check-ups, we monitor your physical and emotional well being. Our goals are a healthy baby and mom and a joyful birth experience. At each visit, we will perform the regular components of prenatal care. This includes checking your blood pressure, weight gain , a urine specimen and baby’s growth and heart beat rates. During the exam we will discuss what we are doing, and why it is an important aspect of your care. Vaginal exams are done only as indicated, and always only upon your request or with your permission.
What makes midwifery care different from routine OB care is the time that we spend focusing on you as an individual. Listening to you is important. Information that you share with us in regards to how you are feeling and adjusting, and even your questions, can provide very useful information surrounding the health of your pregnancy, or possible birthing complications. Should any complications arise, we will arrange for an increased level of care to keep you and your baby as safe as is possible. If hospital transfer is required we will see you through that process and someone from our birthing team will remain with you to provide support as a doula.
During your prenatal visits we will provide lots of information to help you prepare for your birth. We offer birth preparation classes and informative presentations covering many subjects that range from pregnancy health and choices to early parenting made easy. We feel that the responsibility for the health of your pregnancy and your satisfaction with the experience lies largely with you. And we will offer guidance and support in your decision-making as you take on that responsibility.
Postpartum Care
One of the most important differences between midwifery care and routine OB care is the level of postpartum care you will get from the midwife. Adequate support during the postpartum period decreases your risk of postpartum depression, and also decreases the risk of you or your baby developing complications.
We provide a home visit 24 to 48 hours after your baby is born. At this time we will ensure that you are adjusting normally and that you are comfortable caring for your baby. We do newborn screening to check for congenital heart disease and metabolic disorders. And we will also take care of filing your birth certificate.
We do your follow up care for 6 to 8 weeks, watching your baby’s weight gain pattern and general wellbeing, and your recovery as well. While we typically see you weekly for 3 weeks and then 2 more visits 2 weeks apart. We schedule our visits according to your needs. We can see you more frequently or less frequently as you desire. We can also arrange for home visits if you prefer.
We will provide you with support in breast-feeding your baby. We wish to ensure a successful breast-feeding experience as we feel that that is best for your baby and for your recovery.
When I found out I was pregnant, I reached out to Paula and instantly knew that she was the person to help guide and support me throughout my pregnancy. I had heard a lot of positive feedback about Paula from personal friends and patients of mine who have had wonderful birth experiences with her. And they lived up to expectations as the entire staff of The Midwives’ Place (Rachel, Selena, and Serene) went above and beyond to make my first pregnancy and birth of our son the best experience imaginable.
In our first meeting, my husband and I were not only impressed by her calm and welcoming demeanor, but also by her knowledge, experience, and overall professionalism. During my pregnancy, Paula always answered my questions and provided me with helpful tips and resources that helped aid in the overall health of myself and my baby. My birthing experience was nothing short of spectacular! Paula and Rachel made me feel supported and safe as my husband and I welcomed our first child into this world.
When you are in Paula’s care, you walk into her office as a patient and walk out feeling like family. I highly recommend Paula as a midwife and will 100% use her as our midwife if my husband and I are blessed with another child in the future.
